I hate that man. He’s got a mean streak a mile wide. One of these days, he’s going to hurt them. I’m pretty sure he hits Joyce. He doesn’t leave marks that can be seen, but I’ve seen her wince when I’ve patted her arm, or sometimes when she turns wrong. Like he’s hit her in the ribs. What if he starts in on the baby? What’ll I do then?

The house remained silent, not even a creak. Until finally a door opened as if it were inhaling. Maggie turned off the light beside her and waited. Footsteps? In the kitchen?
